Widow and Widower Biodata Format for Remarriage in Pakistan

Starting again with dignity

Remarriage after widowhood is Sunnah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself married widowed women. The Islamic view is unambiguous: widowhood is a life event, not an ending, and the community's role is to make remarriage easy, not to add stigma.

In practice, Pakistani society applies less stigma to widowhood than to divorce, but often also less practical support: fewer specific platforms, fewer rishta aunties who understand the format, fewer sample biodatas that get it right. This guide is written to close that gap.

Why this is distinct from a divorce biodata

A widow biodata is not a divorce biodata with a word changed. Four things are different:

  1. Social framing. More sympathetic, less scrutinising. Families do not ask "why did it end" the way they do with divorce.
  2. Iddat rules. Four months and ten days for a widow (Islamically prescribed). Different from khula/talaq iddat.
  3. The late spouse. Respectful mention (one sentence) is expected. Silence reads as coldness; extended tribute reads as unavailable emotionally.
  4. Children default to the surviving parent. Custody is usually not a question.

The template below reflects these differences.

Fields the widow/widower biodata needs

Marital status line

"Widowed since 2023 (husband, may Allah have mercy on his soul, passed after illness). Iddat completed."
"Widower since 2022, no children. Iddat not applicable."
"Widowed 2024, two children (son 6, daughter 3). Iddat completed 2025."

One factual line, one respectful phrase about the late spouse. Do not extend.

Children and guardianship

"Two children with me (son 6, school; daughter 3). Financial independence maintained."
"One daughter, age 4, living with me. Late husband's family remains in occasional contact but no shared custody."
"No children."

Iddat status

"Iddat completed [year]."
"Currently in iddat, ends [month year]."

For women: iddat is four months and ten days after the husband's passing. Marriage discussions during iddat are limited by Islamic guidance; formal engagement is usually deferred until iddat completes.

Living arrangement and independence

"Living independently with children in own house, Rawalpindi. Financial independence via career."
"Living with my parents since husband's passing. Currently rebuilding financial independence."
"Living with late husband's family (in-laws), by arrangement. Open to change with remarriage."

This is more relevant for widows than divorcees because the widow's post-loss arrangement varies more.

A note on Islamic etiquette

  • Mention the late spouse with a du'a phrase ("may Allah have mercy on his/her soul", or "rahmatullahi alayhi/ha").
  • Do not include the late spouse's name on the biodata itself. Save that for family conversations.
  • Do not describe the cause of death in detail. "After illness" or "in an accident" is enough; specifics belong in a private conversation if asked.
  • Do not include photos from the previous marriage on the biodata.
  • Iddat completion is a fact worth stating because families ask; do not treat it as sensitive.

Circulating a widow/widower biodata

Use platforms with clear marital-status filtering. On QuickRishta select "widowed" as your marital status, and set incoming interest filters to allow widowed and divorced but not never-married-only families (those often have unrealistic expectations for a widow with children).

Community mosque-based networks that run widow/widower support groups also produce genuine leads, particularly for older candidates. Local rishta aunties who have handled bereavement cases are a third channel.

Frequently asked questions

How is widow biodata different from divorced?

Different social framing, different iddat rules, mention of late spouse respectfully, children default to surviving parent.

Should I mention my late spouse?

One respectful sentence, no more. Name goes in family conversation, not biodata.

Photo policy?

Same as any other biodata. Widowhood does not change photo etiquette.
