Category 1: Pressure and secrecy
1. Rushing the nikah date
A family or candidate pushing for nikah within weeks of first contact, or resisting any reasonable pacing (family baithak, background verification, mahr agreement), is signalling something. Legitimate reasons for urgency exist (visa deadlines, elder health) but they are stated openly. Unexplained urgency is a red flag.
2. Refusing family-to-family contact
The single most predictive red flag. Any resistance to direct family involvement - insisting the two candidates handle everything privately, avoiding family meetings, wanting secrecy from your elders - almost always signals something the candidate does not want the family to see.
3. Wanting secrecy from your extended family
Similar to above but at the biradari level. A family that asks you not to tell your uncle or your best friend's mother about the rishta is protecting themselves from being found out in the biradari.
4. Resisting written details
Reluctance to put anything in writing (biodata specifics, mahr agreement, wedding logistics, roka ceremony details). Legitimate families put things in writing for their own protection too; resistance to it usually means avoiding accountability.
Category 2: Financial
5. Undisclosed debt
Debt is not automatically disqualifying, but concealment is. A family that hides existing loans, business debts, or extended family financial obligations is signalling their approach to honesty in future finances too.
6. Dowry demands escalating after agreement
Any escalation of jahez asks after baat pakki (increased demands, new items added, mahr revisions upward under pressure) is a serious warning. The family is transactional and will remain so after nikah.
7. Vague income claims
"Good salary", "MashaAllah well-established", "business is doing very well" without specifics. Compare to the guidance in the biodata guide: bands are enough, but vagueness is a signal.
8. Requests for financial help before nikah
Any request for money before nikah - "urgent family emergency", "small loan we will return quickly", "help with visa fees" - is almost always fraudulent. Legitimate families do not ask for money from a potential in-law family before the wedding.
Category 3: Verification
9. Refusing to share workplace details
Reluctance to name the specific company or role, refusal to allow employer verification calls, or an inability to produce a business card or LinkedIn profile all signal something. Everyone with a genuine job can name their employer.
10. Refusing reference contacts
Every legitimate rishta withstands background reference calls. Refusal or reluctance from claimed references almost always means the references do not know the family well, do not endorse them, or the family reputation is not what has been claimed.
11. Inconsistent documents or claims
Details that shift across conversations (age changes, education year changes, family size changes, prior marriage claims change). Each small inconsistency should be probed; multiple inconsistencies are close-the-process signal.
12. Unwillingness to meet in person for cross-border matches
An overseas candidate who resists a video call, or who cannot travel back for a family meeting despite claiming financial means, is signalling something. Cross-border verification is a real category; skip it and you are hoping.
Category 4: Family behaviour
13. Dismissive treatment of household staff or vendors
How the family treats drivers, house helpers, and vendors at the first meeting predicts how they will treat a daughter-in-law over decades. Character shows in small interactions with people who cannot retaliate.
14. Rudeness to your parents or elders
Even under stress, respectful communication is a baseline expectation. Rudeness at any point of the rishta process signals disrespect that will not disappear post-nikah.
15. Bad-mouthing prior rishtay or spouses
A candidate or family that speaks poorly of a previous rishta process, a former spouse, or a rejected proposal is telling you how they will speak of you when this rishta ends. Discretion and dignity in speaking of others is a baseline character marker.

One red flag deserves a specific conversation. Two red flags means pause the process and check carefully. Three red flags in the same rishta almost always means close it cleanly, regardless of the individual explanations offered.
