What to Share and Hold Back When a Rishta First Talks

A disclosure-staging guide across three phases: first contact, after mutual interest, and after baat pakki. What each stage should share, what must be held back, and why health and divorce history are honesty duties not stigma triggers.

What to Share and Hold Back When a Rishta First Talks

The three-stage disclosure model

Every rishta conversation moves through three stages. Different information is appropriate at each. Sharing too early creates unnecessary vulnerability; sharing too late creates deception. Both damage the rishta.

StageTypical durationWhat is appropriate
First contact1-2 weeksNames, city, education, occupation, family size
After mutual interest2-6 weeksPhotos (controlled), salary band, housing plan, health disclosures that affect marriage
After baat pakkiOngoingDocuments, exact addresses, financial specifics

Stage 1: First contact (share this)

Couple talking respectfully
Staged disclosure protects both families. First contact stays high-level; deeper detail follows mutual serious interest.
  • Names. Full name of candidate; contact person's name and relationship.
  • City and country. Current residence. Ancestral district if relevant to biradari matching.
  • Education. Highest degree, institution, year.
  • Occupation. Job title, industry. Employer name if comfortable.
  • Family composition. Number of siblings, parents' status. Household type (joint or nuclear).
  • Age and marital status. DOB, current status.
  • Biradari or community. If relevant to matching in your context.

Stage 1: Do NOT share

  • Home address (city area is enough; exact street/house number waits)
  • CNIC number or copy
  • Workplace address
  • Personal or family bank statements
  • Salary payslips (a band is enough at this stage)
  • Social media handles (family and workplace privacy)
  • Photos (unless platform-controlled sharing)
  • Detailed health history
  • Family land or property title documents

Stage 2: After mutual interest (share this)

Once both families have expressed serious interest and moved past initial exchange:

  • Photos. Family-appropriate, shared via family-to-family channel or platform-controlled sharing.
  • Salary band. "PKR 300-400k/month" is enough at this stage; exact number and payslips wait.
  • Housing plan. Where will the couple live post-nikah. Own or rented. Joint or nuclear.
  • Health disclosures that affect marriage. Genetic conditions (thalassemia carrier status particularly), chronic illnesses, ongoing treatments.
  • Prior serious rishta process. Whether there have been prior engagement or extended conversations, and how they concluded.
  • Career flexibility. Willingness to relocate, wife's career continuation, husband's family responsibilities.

Health disclosure specifically

Health disclosure is an honesty duty, not a stigma trigger

Genetic conditions (thalassemia, sickle cell, familial genetic disease), chronic conditions that affect marriage (diabetes on insulin, kidney disease, epilepsy), mental health treatment history, and prior serious surgery must be disclosed to the other family before formal engagement, and always before nikah.

Delaying beyond mutual serious interest is deception, not privacy. The rishta will fail at background verification or after nikah when the truth surfaces. Families that respond badly to honest health disclosure at this stage are families the marriage would fail with anyway.

Thalassemia carrier status specifically is worth pre-testing and disclosing early because the medical implication for children of two-carrier couples is serious. Most Pakistani hospitals offer the test cheaply.

Stage 3: After baat pakki (share this)

Baat pakki (families having agreed in principle) opens the disclosure required for wedding logistics and background verification:

  • CNIC copies (both candidates, and parents if wali involvement)
  • Khula/talaq deed (for second-marriage candidates)
  • Exact home addresses
  • Workplace addresses and employer verification contact
  • Financial specifics needed for mahr agreement and wedding planning
  • Property or land title documents if part of the nikahnama context
  • Nikahnama draft for both families to review

Online-specific: platform photo controls

On matrimonial platforms, use photo privacy controls to enforce the staged disclosure rather than making public photos and hoping people ask. On QuickRishta:

  • Default: photo hidden.
  • Mutual interest confirmed: photo visible to that specific user.
  • You control who sees, when, and can revoke.

See our safety guidelines for the full privacy toolkit.

Tone in early conversation

Warm but formal. Reference family members appropriately (ammi/abbu/behn/bhai). Avoid over-familiarity in first exchanges. Avoid interrogating language ("please provide...", "we require..."). Frame as request not demand ("would your family be comfortable sharing...", "when you are ready...").

Frequently asked questions

What should never be shared early?

CNIC, home address, workplace, payslips, bank statements, social handles, land documents. After baat pakki, not first contact.

When to disclose health history?

After mutual serious interest, before formal engagement, always before nikah. Delay is deception.

Photo at first contact?

Common Pakistani norm: after mutual interest is confirmed. Use platform privacy controls.

Control who sees your photos
